About Platelet Rich Plasma
WHAT IS PRP?
PRP, or platelet rich plasma, is an autologous treatment. This means that cells are obtained from an individual and later reintroduced to that same individual. The plasma is collected by drawing blood, and spinning that in a centrifuge. This separates the cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and stem cells), leaving a layer of ‘liquid gold’ that contains a high percentage of growth factors that play an important role in wound healing. When injected into the skin or scalp it can repair and restore tissue and will support the body in producing collagen and elastin.

WHAT IS i-PRF?
i-PRF, or injectable platelet rich fibrin, is very similar to PRP in the way that it is obtained, however i-PRF is spun at a slower speed in the centrifuge. This allows some of the white blood cells and cells to remain within the platelet layer which is then collected for treatment. Alongside its wound healing properties, PRF is able to stimulate the formation of new blood cells which makes it a great option for reducing inflammation and rejuvenation of the skin.

As with any injectable treatment there may be some minor discomfort, however the treatment itself is fairly quick. Depending on the area to be treated you may be able to use numbing cream.

Typically results will begin to show after a few weeks, but this does vary from person to person.

Again this varies from person to person, including the area to be treated, the severity of the concern and your body's natural response to the treatment. Typically between 2-6 sessions are needed every 2-4 weeks, and after the desired result has been achieved you can maintain it with a single treatment every 6 months.

As this treatment is using your body's own natural substance, there are almost no serious risks associated. Potential side effects such as bruising, tenderness and swelling may be experienced as with any injectable treatment.

Technically any area of the body can be treated with both PRP and i-PRF. The most common areas are scalp for hair loss, face, neck, backs of hands, and under eye area for general skin rejuvenation. It can even be used for vaginal and penile health, or to treat pain or inflammation anywhere on the body!

Response to PRP treatments for hair loss will vary from person to person so we can't guaratee exactly how long the results will last. For maximum effect we advise after finishing your course of treatments you should continue with maintenance sessions every 6-12 months.

Yes, in fact PRP & i-PRF can help boost the results and improve your healing following a hair transplant. We typically recommend waiting 4 weeks after your transplant to being PRP, but you should always discuss with your surgeon before embarking on any new treatments.

There have been several studies that show PRP and i-PRF to be effective, however as with any treatment results can vary between patients. For example as PRP relies on your bodies platelets, the success of the treatment can be impacted by the quality of the platelets. Certain individuals, for example those who smoke, regularly drink alcohol or who lead a generally unhealthy lifestyle may have lower quality platelets.

PRP/i-PRF PRE & POST CARE ADVICE

Avoid using any medication or supplements that thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, garlic or evening primrose oil (if prescribed by your doctor please ask them before stopping) for 24 hours before your treatment
Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment
Eat healthily and drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment
On the day of your appointment have a healthy breakfast and drink at least 1 litre of water, but please avoid eating for 2 hours before your treatment.
If you are having PRP treatment for hair loss, please ensure your hair is freshly washed and dried, with no products on the hair

You may experience some swelling, tenderness, itching, tingling or bruising at the injection site and after a scalp treatment you may have a headache
Do not touch or rub the injection site for at least 6 hours
Avoid using any makeup or lotions on the area for at least 24 hours
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after your treatment
No heavy, strenuous activities for at least 24 hours after your treatment
No extreme heat or cold exposure, swimming, saunas, steam rooms or similar for at least 48 hours after your treatment
If you choose to use minoxidil or similar for hair loss you can resume these after 3 days
Eat healthily and stay hydrated, this will help your bodies natural healing process
